Welcome to Little Quilts! We're so excited to participate in the "A Flair For Fabric" blog tour sponsored by Martingale. It started on November 18 and we hope you're enjoying the "up close" look at all the creative designers in the book!
We've been designing scrappy little quilts for more than 25 years, and designing fabric for Henry Glass for almost as many. It's so much fun to collaborate on a book like this. With such a wide variety of designers, the result is a book with something for everyone! "A Flair For Fabric" is a great way to see the creative process at work.
Our books have an autographed book plate from all the designers, but if you'd like an autographed copy from Little Quits personalized to you, order the book from our website, and request an autographed copy in the comment section. We have a special price on the book, too - just $19.95!
Remember, purchasing the book is a gift to the Red Cross...all the designers are donating their royalties to this wonderful charity that helps so many people everyday..
Our project in the book features a reproduction of something near and dear to our hearts - antique doll quilts. We absolutely love the interplay of fabrics in these little treasures and have been inspired to replicate the balance of prints in our quilts. Shown below, our project, "Days Gone By", is a good example of our 'make-do' strategy of design. We love to make up stories while doing patchwork. Perhaps we were pretending we were a girl from the prairie working in a covered wagon on her patchwork and the lighting was not very good...so we picked up a fabric that we thought was the same, but was not exactly like the other ones. This is the method we use while making what we call 'planned scrap quilts.'
One of the fabric styles we like to use to give our quilts a "reproduction" feel is shirtings. We'd like to know if you have any shirtings in your fabric collection and how you're using them. Comment below and you will be entered into a drawing for an eBook copy of "A Flair For Fabric" or a fabric bundle provided by Henry Glass. We're also giving away a bundle of six fat quarters from our new fabric line, "A Touch of Baltimore" along with three shirting fat quarters.
Don't miss tomorrow's stop on the blog hop with Liz and Beth of Lizzie B Cre8tive. They have a fun, whimsical style you're sure to enjoy.
It's not to late to participate in the blog hop. Here is a list of all the participants...you'll love visiting all their creative blogs!

I do not have much shirting in my collection as I pick for colors and prints rather than specific things, such as shirting.
ReplyDeleteI have a few examples of shirting in my stash. If the color match with what I am looking for, they may get used in a project.
ReplyDeleteI have a very limited number of shirtings in my stash. Maybe it's time to get some more?
ReplyDeletethis is a fun hop. I am really enjoying seeing the different blogs and the different projects.

ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful. I have a couple fat quarters of shirting in my stash. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI have an extensive collection of shirtings. I use them as backgrounds for my civil war fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI have lots of shirtings. That's one of my favorites and I use them as backgrounds a lot.
ReplyDeleteMy stash is not all that large and Its do not have much in shirting fabric. I will have to make a point of using them in a project soon.
ReplyDeleteI have a small selection of shirtings in my stash that I bought to make doll clothes. Maybe I should take another look at those - hmm. This blog hop is stretching my ideas and fertilizing my imagination.

I like to use shirtings for my block backgrounds. They are much more interesting than tone on tones. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any shirting in my stash - maybe I should!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any shirting in my stash.
ReplyDeleteMy stash does not include shirting yet. I am always looking for new ideas. thank you for this one
ReplyDeleteHmmm Shirting fabric sounds interesting for quilts! I've used it in making doll clothes but never a quilt. Sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteI once used shirting for the borders in a baby quilt made of 1950s vintage fabric. The pale blue and white striped shirting "calmed the 50s Hawaiian style print" quite well. Thanks for the opportunity to win some great prizes!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any shirting in my stash.

I had to actually look up shirting! I had heard the term before, but wasn't really sure if it refered to a style or a grade of fabric. I didn't really find an answer that I was satisfied with. From my reading, I would say that I don't have any original in my stash, but I love the little prints that I saw and I do have some of those. I would love to win a copy of this book and some of the awesome fabrics you are giving away. Thanks so much for the chance to win! I'm always learning new things! Quilt On!
ReplyDeleteYep, I love shirtings too - use lots of them for scrappy backgrounds in my appliquéd quilts. BTW - sometimes I buy actual shirts from the thrift store and use those mixed with new fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI only have a few shirtings in my stash, but I have used them as background fabrics with thirties or forties repro fabrics. They blend in well.
ReplyDeleteYes, I love to use shirtings in scrappy quilts. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI don't have shirting material in my stash. I've always admired the quilts which use them, especially the 9 patch patterns. I think I would need to go to a thrift store to get shirts, my husband wears knit polos. Thanks for hosting this giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI have a small collection of shirting material in my stash and just love the look of them in various projects! Thanks so much for this opportunity!
ReplyDeleteIt has been so much fun reading all of the blogs in this blog hop.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilts.

ReplyDeleteGreat prize, count me in.
ReplyDeleteI do have a limited number of shirtings in my stash. I have used them in a log cabin project. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
ReplyDeleteI have a few pieces of shirting and I use them as backgrounds for appliqué. Love your quilt!
ReplyDeleteI don't have many 'shirting' FQ's, but I've been known to use actual shirt fabrics in my quilts. I made small bowtie quilts from my father-in-laws actual shirts and gave them to his adult children.
ReplyDeleteI am not entirely sure what shirting is. It seems to be light fabric with a small print, and not just pinstripes that men usually use on shirts these days... if that's the case, I have a small pile of them, and I love them. I use them as background as much as I can because I like prints much more than solids. sarah@forrussia.org
ReplyDeleteI love shirtings but have only use them in Civil War reproduction quilts. I would love to use them in other projects.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win.
Mary

ReplyDeleteI don't have any shirting fabrics in my inventory, but I am beginning to feel the pull towards them. I've always known it was just a matter of time. . .

ReplyDeleteI don't have any shirting in my stash. Mostly what I have is a bit of yardage but mostly FQs.

ReplyDeleteThe only shirting I have in my stash is one that was described as an Oriental shirting - it's really intriguing with little pagodas and bridges. I've used it very successfully with reproduction prints and love the look it gives.
ReplyDeleteI adore making little quilts - two friends have antique doll beds and I have a blast thinking up little quilts for them.
Thanks for the chance at the book and the fabric!

I just purchased a mini 2 1/2 shirting charm pack (not sure if that is the correct name of the 2 1/2 little squares) & a few fat quarters when I went to Houston Quilt festival this year. I love to create small quilts and I am planning to use these on one of my patterns. I in just have to decide which ones to make first. I love nine patch & stars so I will probably make one of those 2 first. I love the old antique look of quilts with the reproduction fabrics and shirting fabrics.
