Amanda Smallwood's "Feathered Fascination" got a 2nd Place in Two Person,
Pieced Large Quilt. She used the pattern from Vintage Moments by Marsha McCloskey and added her own interpretation.  Amanda is on the staff and teaches here.

Linda Wirtz's "Scrappy Hunter's Star" got 1st Place for Small Pieced Quilt.  Linda is on our staff and teaches the Hunter's Star Class, piecing classes  and machine quilting.

Marty Young's "Gathering Roses", got 3rd Place in Miniature. Marty teaches fun classes to stretch your creativity.

Fran House's "Flower Patch" got 3rd Place in combination of pieced and appliqué. Fran teaches our primitive and wool appliqué classes.

Post East Cobb Quilt Guild Quilt Show - The Winner!

We can hardly believe it was one week ago , the East Cobb Quilters' Guild Show took place at the Cobb Civic Center. We are so excited that many of our teachers have won awards, and also many of our teacher's students also got ribbons and Honorable Mentions. I'm grateful to have such great teachers here at Little Quilts. The show was beautiful and we enjoyed meeting those of you who stopped by the booth at the show. There will be a DVD available for purchase in October showing all the quilts including 'behind the scenes' pictures of the show coming together from beginning to end. You can call and order a DVD for $10. For now...sit back and enjoy this ' quilt show.'

Anne Anderberg's "All Aboard" shown here won Best Of Show, 1st Place in Combination, as well as Viewer's Choice and Quilter's Choice (votes by members of the Quilt Guild). We're so proud of her! Anne teaches hand appliqué, hand piecing and hand quilting here. She'll be teaching a series
after the 1st of the year on how to make these beautiful pictorial quilts.

Little Quilts and 9/11/2001

We sent an email to those on our email newsletter list and we got so many nice responses we thought there might be a few who do not subscribe to the email newsletter that did not see this.  ( If you wish to subscribe, you can do so on the home page of www.littlequilts.com).

At this time we all can’t help but remember, in our own way, the events of 10 years ago on Sept 11^th. We all remember where we were and what we were doing that day. We recall how we sent a note to our 500 email newsletter subscribers, asking for quilters to make a small quilt not bigger than 24 inches square. In times of tragedy or sorrow, quilters just need to take fabrics in hand and ‘sew something’. We offered to collect these small quilts, and send them to the families of the police and fire departments in New York City who had lost loved ones in the tragedy of 9/11. That message was forwarded to fellow quilters who also forwarded it on to other quilters. We were overwhelmed by the response and received more than 2200 small quilts shown here. If with a 3-4 week time frame.  The deadline was set as Oct. 25th. 
We laid them out in our parking lot and the fire department sent a ‘bucket truck’ so we could go to the top and make a photograph of this heartwarming event. This picture was shown on national television and magazines. We received many notes from the quilt makers who tried to find, and recognized their quilt in this beautiful maze of small quilts. This postcard was sent to the participants. We wish we could have met everyone personally to express our thanks – perhaps we will someday.

Look what you can do with bits and pieces of quilts! After taking a machine quilting class, one of our customers turned her practice piece into this cute pin.   

Susan just finished this bright and cheery wall hanging. Susan was so unhappy with the pattern she wouldn’t even share the name of it so if you want to reproduce the quilt you’re on your own!

  Janice made this great Lone Star quilt from one Jelly roll and the “Jelly Stars” pattern from Fig Tree.

  Some of our customers are miniaturizing our Second Saturday Sampler blocks. Isn’t this the cutest little block ever?

August Second Saturday Sampler part 1

Tomorrow will be a gorgeous day for Second Saturday Sampler.  You will have a guest visitor (Libby) and enjoy a great show and tell like this one from last month.


Madelyn loves Georgia O’Keefe so her daughter gave her this great O’Keefe-style fabric for Christmas. Madelyn couldn’t bear to cut it up into tiny pieces so she found this great pattern to showcase the fabric in the Quilts & More Magazine (Winter 2010)

The same magazine featured the pattern for this quilt which showcases fabrics from Madelyn’s large collection of floral fabrics.

Julie went on a quilt retreat in Missouri and learned to make these great stars. With the technique she used, Julie made two blocks at the same time which made this project go really fast. Pattern is Liz Porter’s “Lucky Stars”.

 Amy used her 6” Second Saturday Sampler blocks to make this stunning quilt!

 As if there wasn’t enough work on the front of the quilt, this is the back of Amy’s sampler quilt.

Summer Sewing - great for multigenerations

Brittany came in with her grandmother to show us her quilt. It was made from a kit she purchased in a shop in NC. She is just fifteen years old and Grandmother was oh so proud! I think she is on her way to becoming a quilter.

The weather is turning cooler (I think!) so it’s time to turn your thoughts to Fall and especially Halloween. The shop is all decorated and we have some of the cutest witches, ghosts and pumpkins ever. Baltimore Beauty

Wanda helped her pick out many of the fabrics in her blocks (Wanda's fame spreads far and wide!). Sandy has decided that 9 blocks is enough for the quilt center, so she's currently working on the borders (equally elaborate!) to finish the quilt.

Art to Heart... a favorite!

The new Bittersweet book from Nancy Halverson is here with great ideas for Fall all using fabrics from the Bittersweet fabric line. You’ll love the reds, golds, greens, and purples from this line.

Creative use of Fabric Yo-Yo's

At Wool Works recently Sandy brought in her yo-yo quilt made from Kim Diehl’s book “Simple Graces”. Yo-yo’s are the perfect summer carry along project. We have the yo-yo maker in all sizes to make them even faster!  And the book too!

Everyone enjoyed the “Morning With Marty” class on Monday where teacher Marty Young shared some of her unique quilts. Her quilt “For The Love Of Angels” just returned after being a part of the Sacred Threads exhibit for the past year. The Bee's Knees

 It’s not quilt related, but when Libby came in with this needlepoint “bee” bag on her arm, we just knew you’d want to see it! Not only did Libby make the bag, she also knit the beautiful shawl she’s wearing. Very chic!

Creative Customer

It has been so much fun having Judy in town! Judy is from Wisconsin and accompanied her husband who is here for two weeks of job training. Of course, Judy wanted to sign up for some “training” of her own and has taken several of our classes. She stopped by today to show us some of her crafting projects. Her ornaments were adorable and are seen here on a Tumbling Blocks quilt top she started in our Summer Camp session. Instead of cutting diamonds for the blocks, Judy used the Square 2 ruler to make square-in-a-square blocks. Careful color placement results in the tumbling blocks pattern. We thought Judy’s crocheted Viking hat was too cute!

Encourage Creativity - young and old

Stonehenge fabric comes alive

We are all so excited for Little Quilts teacher, Dena’s son who graduated from college with a degree in geology. He’s on his way to Utah this summer for graduate school and this quilt is going with him! I can’t think of anything more appropriate for a geologist than a quilt made from Stonehenge fabric.

Daisy Dew

Marcia brought it this quilt and we were all blown away! The pattern is “Daisy Dew” from the book,  
 Quilts For All Seasons and Some For No Reason by American Jane. We had this quilt in the shop for a trunk show several years ago and Marcia bought the pattern at that time. She took several of our classes to perfect her sewing skills before attempting the quilt, and we think she mastered the techniques beautifully!

Treasures for Sale

The classroom is full of goodies marked way down, so be sure not to miss our Garage Sale this week-end. Sale dates are Fri., July 15 – Sat., July 16, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. There’s a whole table overflowing with fabric that will be sold by the pound with ALL proceeds going to charity. One whole table of books is priced at $2 with a portion of the proceeds also going to charity. Come early so you won’t miss out on any of the great bargains! Help us clean out the shop to make room for all the great new fabric that’s coming in!

We flipped through one of our favorite quilt magazines, Quiltmania, and in an article about doll quilts..."what do we see",  but the quilt Honeybees from the pattern by the same name.  It is the one on the iron bed.
