And speaking of chocolate, we feel there’s nothing like a black/chocolate/tan  quilt!  We now have kits available for this  great pattern from Primitive Gatherings featuring fabric from their Little Gatherings line of fabric.  We’ve got a kit for the 55” square wall hanging made with 5” star blocks and half square triangle blocks. High contrast is what gives this quilt its rich look.  The pattern also includes directions to make a 110" x 110" larger version. 

You may enjoy making a simple but very effective pattern by Karen Mowery of Folk Art Children called Homestead Toile.  It's a two-color scheme of cream and hot chocolate, available in the shop or from Folk Art Children:

Day 3: November 15th ~ Henry Glass Jolly Holiday Party

Welcome to the day we're featured with our free project for the Jolly Holiday Hop. We love creating small vignettes with trees and special holiday decorations on tables and rooms in our homes. A little quilt can be placed on a table with special mementos, even a favorite bear or doll. It's just another way to use a little quilt besides hanging on a wall. These small arrangements can put the holidays all around your house. We just took down our little vignettes with pumpkins and crows with a small orange and black patchwork quilt.

For a Christmas vignette, gather together a few table-top trees. Add some of your favorite ornaments, a special collectible (ours is a bear by a local bear artist), and our 9” square Sunbonnet Sue Christmas Stitchery, and you have the perfect little Christmas decoration for any room. With small settings around the home, your guests will never notice that you didn’t put the big tree up this year!

1.  What is your favorite holiday food? My grandmother and then my mother would always make pork, sauerkraut, and dumplings for Thanksgiving along with turkey; and again at Christmas time…but without the turkey!

2. Does your family have a favorite holiday tradition? I’m not sure it’s always their favorite but as my daughter and son were growing up, we would watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” with Jimmy Stewart:

and then watch Chevy Chase’s “Christmas Vacation” after Thanksgiving dinner. 

It’s still very funny even though I’ve seen it more than 25 times. We even watch it in the Summer, at family reunions!

3. Did you like or hate sitting on Santa’s lap? I don’t remember, but I did see pictures of myself as a child crying on Santa’s lap!

4. What was a gift that you really desperately wanted? Did you get it? I wanted a two wheel black Schwinn bicycle one year and did get it!


5. What’s your favorite holiday movie Chevy Chase’s “Christmas Vacation.”

6. Favorite holiday song? “Jingle Bell Hop”.

7. Do you make many holiday presents? Just a few for my special stitch in friends. I like to look all during the year for just the right gift for friends and avoid the crazy rush during the holidays.
8. Would you prefer a large fully decorated tree on one like Charlie Brown’s tree? The past few years I have not put up a large tree. I prefer to put smaller trees with a theme in different rooms around the house; as the one shown in our project this year.

9. If you could go back in time, what would you say is your most favorite holiday memory. I really enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday as it’s a day to spend with friends without the rushing around preparing for gift giving.
10. Do you like a big family gathering at the holidays or do you prefer a small dinner followed by hot chocolate by the fire. I prefer a small family gathering with everyone watching “Christmas Vacation” which my son (age 40), and daughter (age 35) have seen at least 20 times!...enjoying hot chocolate and homemade apple pie.

Day 2: November 14th ~ Henry Glass Jolly Holiday Party

As you can see, our staff and customers have been getting very creative with the Olde America Antiques quilt blocks.  Images for the blocks are derived from vintage postcards or other vintage drawings and printed onto soft cotton sateen fabric into 4” x 6” blocks that are perfect for quilting.  They are sold in sets of four similar prints in each package with hundreds of sets to select from.  We’ve made many small quilts from the pattern included with the block sets (see the Santa quilt at left), but as you can see, you’re only limited by your imagination in what you can do with them!

Below are some samples done by the Vintage Design Group at the  shop. Linda’s looks like we’re looking through the window at the little girl sewing. The second one framed with the quarter square triangle blocks has a border done with the first toile designed by Little Quilts for Henry Glass fabrics. Notice in the model done by Nancy at the bottom, the postcard print she chose matches her antique Singer sewing machine! What a treasure Nancy has!

Mary Ellen and four other Henry Glass designers called themselves “The Designing Divas” and did mini presentations at School House before the start of the Quilt Market in Houston last week. Shown here is Hampton Farm and some of the other projects available as free downloads on the new Henry Glass website – www.henryglassfabrics.com.

BOO from Baltimore

We have some of the most talented appliquers here at Little Quilts! Geri finished this “Baltimore Halloween” just in time for the holiday. The quilt was not only fun to applique, but will be fun to display!  You saw the top earlier, now it has been custom quilted.  Great!

Mary Ellen just arrived in Houston for quilt market. Here's the Cotton Club Quilt all sewn - what a beauty! It is a current block of the month at Little Quilts.

No such thing as "Just A Triangle"

Libby brought in this beautiful scrappy quilt made totally from Half-Square Triangle blocks. We loved the old-timey reproduction look!

A Christmas Pickle?

Trish finished a pickle dish table topper using fabrics from Moda’s “Jovial” line.  See a pevious blog posting for another quilt by Trish in a different color palette.

Santa Plus..

Remember the Santa Applique Block of the Month we did way back in 2009? Those old projects do get finished eventually! Cherie’s quilt is set differently from the original pattern – she actually made her Second Saturday Sampler blocks in Christmasy colors and used those for her alternate blocks. What a great idea!

Ah...youth

Courtney signed up for all our Children’s Classes this summer and used charm packs to make this cute wall hanging. In another of the classes she made a monogrammed pillow which she gave to her grandmother for signing her up for the classes!

Patriotic

We do love flags at Little Quilts so we were thrilled when Shelby brought this very patriotic quilt in to show us! Shelby purchased the kit for this project from Keepsake Quilting years ago. 

Little Quilts - International

One of our customers, Jane, has a quilting pen pal, Maz, from Wales who sent pictures of two quilts she recently finished. The Nine-Patch quilt is a reproduction of one of Mary Ellen's antique quilts. The pattern for the antique quilt was published in American Patchwork and Quilting. Both quilts are intricately hand quilted.
